Madison, Connecticut - Monday, April 16, 2001

=Bookstore Interview Transcript=
Thanks to Monica

At 7:05 a MS. Roxanne Coady the owner of R.J. Julia Books who sponsored the event stepped up on stage and said that Charlotte had not arrived yet but that she was expected to be arriving momentarily. She went on to introduce the stores events director
a Ms. Linda Hill. Ms. Coady further said that anyone who had questions should write the questions on paper and put them into a pile of questions on the table in front of the stage and that random questions would be asked of Charlotte from the pile after she arrived. Charlotte's publicist Christine Dao arrived and was introduced by Ms. Coady.

At 7:15 pm Charlotte's bus transportation arrived. We were all told that not only was Charlotte finally here but that also she had her parents with her. In truth we never did get to see her parents as they stayed behind stage listening in. As for Charlotte she walked in from behind stage at approximately 7:20 pm and was given applause.

Charlotte's publicist was the one to read the questions off to Charlotte and Charlotte was on stage to respond to them in front of a microphone which barely amplified her talking voice.

The first question asked was Do you ever get frustrated or upset while doing a concert or  when writing your book.

Charlotte : "Uhh .. I dunno .. writing a book at such a young age. It doesn't even bother me whether I'm singing for my family in a pub or President Clinton in the White House you know it's just kind of the same by me. So, ummm, you know, that doesn't even bother me or get to me there. But the times I have gotten into it such as carrying on. Stop it and just get away so there's no upsetting in life except everybody tells me breathe deeply. I tried it once it's supposed to be good. "

Ms. Dao: Ok .. and someone else asked "What's your family like?"...

Charlotte: "What's my family like?... Ohhh .. Well my parents as you recall are quite young...uhhh .. they travel with me every- where so that can be a bit of a pain. This is true."

Crowd laughs loudly.

Charlotte: "Uhh but maybe you do (...)maybe you do. He planned my whole career so that's good. And then my grandparents.. my grand- father is a captain. He's a mad Welsh man who loves to sing the blues and comes to any family gathering to sing the blues. And he has a camper with him. And all my family you know kind of loves to get together and have big parties and sing. That's my family thing. All my cousins sing all my Aunties and Uncles sing. My Mum used to play classical guitar and they entered professional competition ....so its just like a whole big sing along to me ..."

Ms. Dao: "Uhh .. somebody else asked .. what's in your CD Player right now?"

Charlotte: "Errrrmmm.. Coldplay .. Coldplay and before that Paula Abdul so but I have got a really wide range of musical taste.. because I do like to listen to some classical and I like
Sting and I like Destiny's Child and I like all the new stuff. So I like everything from R&B and Hip Hop to Classical to Rock and everything."

Ms. Dao: "And who influences you musically..?"

Charlotte: "Nobody really influences me musically because I do have a real different .. I mean kinda like a genre of my own and like I mean I do get ideas for songs quite a number of them and like if I listen to a Barbara Streisand album and there's a song appeals to me then I mean now I go and sing that song.. ummm but nobody in particular."

Ms. Dao: And who decides what you sing?

Charlotte: "Me and my singing teacher primarily decide what I sing. It's generally uhhh me and her decide which song were going to sing.. which songs have beautiful melodies, beautiful lyrics. And .. and now we come to the core thing. And of course thepeople at Sony.. which is my record company I will not lie it doesn't look good. .. and the producers of the album have imput on anything new. But for the majority of songs it's generally my
singing teacher."

Ms. Dao: Uhhh .. if you could do a duet with anyone, who would it be?

Charlotte: That's really hard ... I did ... I got to uhhh perform at Carnegie Hall with Wycliff Jean, and umm we did Summertime and he played Spanish Guitar and I sang beside him and that was really cool. uhh he's a cool kind of guy. But I really like to say he's calm, collected , with a good head."

Ms. Dao: Well the next question was Have you ever played CarnegieHall? So I guess that's yes.

Charlotte: "I haven't like, done my .. like a _ME_ show in Carnegie Hall .. or something ... I held quite an attractive show in the parking lot that day."

Ms. Dao: Ummm ... this is not my questions .. all of you .. these are all your questions. This woman writes .. Do you have any relatives in Madison, Ct. because my last name is Church.

Charlotte: "I have to say none that I know of .. not that I know of. .. but you know you never know."

Ms. Dao: Umm.. Do you ever have any trouble with your voice and if so what do you do?

Charlotte: "Umm not really ... if I get cold or it gets a bit hoarse, or generally I try not to .. if there's a radio program or on A1TV which is really, really, hot singing , morning talk.
When I wake up in the morning I try Barry White which is no problem cause he's rich by Sony. And so generally I try and avoid singing in the morning. I never have any really big problems with my throat. So I think I'd be quite unconcerned about it .. but considering the amount of traveling I do, I think my first recourse would be my road."

Ms. Dao: Uhhh How do you manage school in your very busy schedule..?

Charlotte: "Well when I'm on the road I have two packaged Tutors, Richard and Catherine, and they tutor me in Math English Science .. no not science .. Math , english , geography,
history, french .. I think that's it. And uhhh .. And then we begin to talk. And then when I go back home I go back to school it's normal. So I get the best of both worlds because I get the best education today. Because I have more than one tutor whenever I'm tutored. And I get by socially because I get to go home and see my friends and be grand with them."

Ms. Dao: Uhh Are your friends jealous of your success and all you had mentioned?

Charlotte: "Not at all. because uhh none of them act like performers or anything so their not really jealous because they've never wanted to do what I do. And a lot of my friends
get to come on trips with me like my friend Farrah, I kidnapped her to America with me and she just went home today. And my friend Jo came to Australia. (about 5 words missing not audibly clear) And so he went to the grounds with me which is like wild. And so uhh they all get to come on trips with me which is good for them and it's good for me too because I get company and I get to share my adventures with them all."

Ms. Dao: Somebody asked "Have you ever met Prince William?"

Charlotte: "No I haven't and there was this really big story about me fancying Prince William. Because all I said was that he is handsome and he is like the most elligible bachelor in the world. But then it's like Charlotte wants to be Princess of Wales. NO !!! And so I havn't met him but I'm going to meet him and his command probably sit in Hyde Park with Pavarotti, which is going to be cool. And then that's going to be even clearer. I'm gonna die of embarrassment."

Ms. Dao: If there was any one place to sing that you haven't sang yet .. what would that be?

Charlotte: "Ohhhhhhh Probably Sydney Opera House because of it's nice weather."

Ms. Dao: And this is the last one here... but your asked.. What do you want to do when you grow up?

Charlotte: "I don't know actually .. because yeah .. I'll probably .. I'll always be singing. But Ummm I'm not sure you know for how long. There could be career changes or stuff like
that. Or just you know if I just couldn't figure this out myself. Frankly now I don't know. But I'd like to say that it's basically my booster... to study philosophy, Anthropology, and
history. And .. So I don't know .. I have no idea. I wish I could tell you."

Ms. Dao: That was the last question. And I guess well have to section this off.

Charlotte: "Ok obviously I need a pen."

Ms. Dao: Take a quick break and well be right back.

Linda Hill: We're going to have the final portion now, and just to keep it organized and for security reasons it would be great if we did it by section. (Pointing to her right she continued..) And if this section can line up at the piano and the line will go to the back of the room. And were going to do it in umm .. a five person increment. And umm Charlotte will be signing here. she will sign one CD if you did purchase a book and were asking that
there be a two book per person limit. Umm and she will not personalize because you'll find umm she will be happy to sign and say hello. Ok thanks.
