Title:
"The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno
Date of transmission: Monday 30
October 2000
Channel: NBC
Host: Jay Leno
Charlotte's role in programme:
Featured Guest
Charlotte
made her third stop and second Television appearance of this
California tour on NBC's "The Tonight Show" with
Jay Leno. Charlotte has been on Jay's show no less than 3
times before this so she is quite friendly with him. Jay
also hosted the "Carousel of Hope"
event yesterday.
This
appearance was quite a groundbreaking one because it marked
the television debut of "dream a dream". Billy
Gilman joined Charlotte to sing the duet and was dressed in
a black outfit. Charlotte wore a red dress to complement the
extensive use of red in the "dream a dream" album.
Before
Billy and Charlotte came out though U.S. Presidential
Candidate George W. Bush was one of Jay's guests. For those
of you that aren't living in the USA, George W. likes to
joke about the media's portrayal of him being stupid so at
the beginning of the show he did a little skit with Jay
about his inability to say the word 'Flammable'.
Personally I think the joke about him being stupid is
getting a little old but the candidates have to do something
to attract attention.
Charlotte
and Billy finally came on after being preceded by a female
actress. The shot went directly to a the sound stage on the
Tonight Show set where a miniature orchestra was set up to
play "dream a dream". Billy kept snapping his
fingers and tapping his shoes on the stage while Charlotte
seemed content just to stand still. Charlotte performed her
portion of the song flawlessly, I mean this was comparable
if not better than the version on CD! Next, Billy began his
portion and well.. it didn't sound as good as Charlotte's.
Frankly, it was a little flat and lacked the power of
Charlotte's. The two then rejoined for the final portion and
each had their turn for one last high note at the end.
Overall, Charlotte did excellent and Billy didn't match up
but I got to give the guy credit for getting out there and
singing with the best in the world.
Next,
Billy and Charlotte came on the stage to meet Jay. They both
took their seats, Billy seemed to sit on the edge of his
seat while Charlotte sat back, cool and confident. Below is
my best attempt to relive the dialogue:
Jay
- "Hey Buddy, good to see you again. Hey Charlotte! Have a seat you guys. That was great!"
Charlotte and Billy - "Thank you!"
Jay (to Charlotte) - "I can't get over it, you used to come here and you used to play video games. Your all grown
up now! I used to give her Game Boy's now it's like I got to give her perfume."
Charlotte - Laughs
Jay - "It's Halloween, are you guys going Trick or Treating?"
Billy - "When I leave here I'm hoping on a plane so I can be home with my family for
Halloween. I'm dressing up as scream."
Jay - "I got a Bush and Gore mask, you can take one of those!"
Charlotte - "Well, In Britain we don't really celebrate it as much as you do, its just
kinda like a lit'l thing."
Jay - "A lit'l thing ?"
Charlotte - "Yeah, it's like after the age of 7 your considered really sad if you dress up in Britain but then if I was over here, then I'd be dressing up as something scary...like a Vampire or something"
Jay - "A Vampire is good"
Billy - "Yeah well my Brother has this mask, its a scream mask but when you pump something with your hand blood gushes through it"
Charlotte - Laughs
Jay (To Billy) - "Well that sounds lovely! Why do I think you wish you had that? Look I can tell, your jealous of your brother!"
Jay - "Allright I want to thank my guests, Charlotte Church , dream a dream. Boy, Just wonderful you guys! That was great! What a lovely duet that is!"
After
the show ended, Charlotte went next door so to speak to tape
NBC's "Later" which will air sometime next week.
Naturally you can expect total coverage of that event as
well right here. Overall, this was one of Charlotte's
best TV performances to date, I know we keep saying that but
they just keep getting better and better. I can't wait until
"dream a dream" gets released to the world because
it's going to set all sorts of records for sales worldwide.
Excellent job yet again Charlotte!
