This
is an exclusive presentation of Charlotte's interview/performance
on the Oxygen Network's "Exhale with Candice
Bergen". "Exhale" is a show devoted to
conversation with women, young and old who are making a
difference and breaking down barriers in their arena of life.
The show is hosted by Candice Bergen who is known by many as
"Murphy Brown" after her successful sitcom show that
aired on CBS in the 90's. Charlotte
sits down with Candice to discuss a variety of topics then
performs "Dream a Dream". This segment was aired for
the first time on February 1, 2001. However, Oxygen is a very
young network and as such didn't have great coverage of North
America at the time. Charlotte's segment was continually
re-aired throughout the year and now we have finally able to
bring it to you courtesy of its August repeat. Below are video
and captures.

With Candice Bergen Special Guest Charlotte Church
Unidentified female voice says :
"We Got your message."
Candice: "Welcome back to exhale. I'm Candice Bergen. Since her 1999 debut with the aptly titled Voice of an Angel, Charlotte Church has sold over 4 million albums in the U.S. alone. The latest album from this 14 year old Soprano from Wales is called Dream a Dream. Charlotte you're a peach to be with us, when .. when you have this schedule thats insane basically. That .. I mean God knows you have youth on your side but still..."
Charlotte: "It is pretty wild yeah."
Candice: "So do you ever get cranky?"
Charlotte: "Me. oh yeah of course I mean like everybody."
Candice: "Because your schedule is just back breaking."
Charlotte: "I mean yeah it is and we're traveling constantly and of course with the jet lag .. and then jet lag is tiredness and tiredness is moodiness that would do for me anyway. And but uh I mean when I go to different places then I understand that I can't go in there with a negative attitude being moody just because I'm tired. Because that's not the way I wanna be seen or anything. I mean and then people would go Oh yeah she was so moody when she came in here. We didn't do anything wrong.. you know."
Candice: "She's so demanding."
Charlotte: "Yeah ... so you know I just try my best to try and be like level all the time and then of course my parents travel everywhere with me and so they kinda help me. And also, I um must say I'm a shop-a-holic. I love shopping. But most of the time with my allowance I don't have enough money. I'll just look in the window going Oh I wish I could buy that. But umm ..."
Candice: "This is so irronic considering what you earn."
Charlotte: " Yeah I know but I mean it kinda keeps me grounded and gives me good values and makes me know the value of money and stuff like that. So umm .. so .. but shopping always makes me happy."
Candice: "So for instance now after this you'll have an hour free is that what you do to sort of take a deep breath and ummm just sort of make a break from working so hard."
Charlotte: "Well like sometimes when I have like umm a couple of hours off then I might go sight seeing in a place that I've been."
Candice: "Did you have it in your recording contract at some point that you were entitled to a day at Disney Land."
Charlotte: "Yeah.. I mean when I first signed with Sony when I was Ummm 12 I think I was.. 11 .. 12... and ummm joke'ily I said I hope that this has a trip to Disneyland non recoverable in it and there I go oh yeah laughing. I still haven't been yet. I've ... I've been to the one in Tokyo."
Candice: "You haven't been yet?"
Charlotte: "I haven't been to Disneyland no.
Candice: "Charlotte this is so cruel."
Charlotte: "I know .. I have to go .. I have to go .. Hopefully I'll be going next year."
Candice: "But now your much older because when I met you was I don't know.. I have no memory .. two years ago... a year and a half. And you were .. we were saying that my daughters 15 .. and the age jump that you make from 12 to 13 .. and 13 to 14 is so tremendous .. what .. what would you joke'ily ask for now? A day at Barney's?"
Charlotte: "Probably."
Transcriber : "Both here laugh heartily"
Charlotte: "Probably something like that but umm you know when .. when I was like just starting out when I was 12 and 13 and everybody got me teddy bears. Everyone bought me teddy bears which is understandable I mean because like I was young and I love them and they're all over my room. But now people still get me teddy bears and its like ... they can stop now."
Candice: "All right stop this. No more bears."
Charlotte: "Yeah and then my grandmother.. my grandmother keeps saying .. Charlotte you've got to tell them you don't want teddy bears you want Cartier Jewelry. I'm going Nana I think thats a bit much to ask now."
Candice: "Well a still of makeup perhaps is certainly reasonable. Umm when you're in this tornado of publicity do you start to spin out of control ever? Is it hard to keep your head screwed on straight?"
Charlotte: "Ummm .. not really because I mean my two tuters travel around with me everywhere."
Candice: "Do you have 3 hours tutoring a day five days a week when you are not in school. When you are on tour?"
Charlotte: "Yeah. . . Yeah."
Candice: "Your on tour how many months a year?"
Charlotte: "Ummm .. I mean it's not a set time .. I mean I'm never on like a concert tour because it umm it would be hard for my voice to take like a 50 date tour or something like that. And.. but generally it's just a promotional tour when ..my tutors travel with me. But then it's kind of .. it's not like a normal teacher pupil relationship because these .. I mean they're like living in our pockets. They're living in my right hand pocket. They're both real young so they're not strict or anything and we have fun in essence and stuff like that."
Candice: "They're pals and everything."
Charlotte: "Yeah .. yeah .. and umm .. so that works out really well. And I .. I manage to keep up with my studies and sometimes when I go back to school .. cause I still go back to school when I go home in Wales. Then sometimes we're ahead and stuff like that .. so that's uhh also a big bonus as well. So I do get the best of both worlds and to be able to go back home and to school and see my friends and being able to get a really good education."
Candice: "Has it uhh .. has your incredible fame distanced you from your friends? Or do they keep you grounded?"
Charlotte: "My friends definitely keep me grounded .. as well as my whole family. And umm so I mean like when I go home my friends will be like .. don't you get big headed here .. right to your room .. make us a cup of tea go on. You know so and all my family as well. And we're such a close knit family .. even the extended family like my grandmother .. my grandfather .. my auntie .. my uncle .. my cousin. And I see my mum and my Dad and all of those people every day when I go home. So we're a really close family and so .. and I kind of .. I've got a good enough understanding of what I do. And I kind of .. I take it all with a pinch of salt .. as .. I don't want to take it all too seriously otherwise I get too wrapped up in it and then you know I'll be like too mad by it. So you know .. umm kind of just try and understand as best I can that it probably is not gonna last forever and this isn't like the only thing in the world to do. And you know that kind of keeps me grounded as well as lot's of other factors."
Candice: "Is it uhh .. is it still true that your .. your professional dream is to sing Madame Butterfly at La
Scalla?"
Charlotte: "Well not really .. I mean when I first started out I used to say that I wanted to be an opera singer and I wanted to sing in this place and this place. But now you know I'm .. I'm not so sure I mean next year I want to try different things in my voice and not just classical music. Umm because before I started singing classical I used to have a completely different voice to what I have now. And so I'd like to try and experiment and see what my voice can do and see what kind of music suits that kind of voice and stuff like that so umm..."
Candice: "Do you have any idea now what you would sing..?"
Charlotte: "I have no idea where I'll go musically."
Candice: "Because ..you .. you .. do you like Celine
Dion too is that right?"
Charlotte: "Yeah I mean Celine's great and I mean I like this .. I like every type of music. Umm .. I mean there are certain types of music that I prefer to others... but then I can kinda like respect certain artists for what they do."
Candice: "And are you also working on a memoir?"
Charlotte: "Yeah .. well umm .. it's not really like a life story because
that's stupid at 14. Umm .. it's just ridiculous. So what it is .. it's kind of like umm .. the story that has happened so far because being such a
fairy tale .. it was complete fate that I was umm ..uhh discovered .. and complete fate everything .. everything that has happened.. happened and it's it's really odd because I go from two completely different lives.. from this life to going on tv and making albums and having friends and stuff like that to going back home and being completely normal with my friends and you know .. my family and just living at home and being normal and going to school and doing homework and you know and tidying my room. So I mean they're such different lives and it's
really funny .. interesting book because it.. it explains the two different lives and stuff like that. And even if I wasn't who I was it would still make a funny read but then you probably wouldn't believe it."
Candice: "No! I .. I don't think that we would. And I know that your voice has .. has of course matured and changed now since you've had training but were you .. were you about three years old when you opened your mouth to sing and this voice came out?"
Charlotte: "I mean when I was three I used to sing. I used to sing Ghost Busters. And so it was never like this. I .. you know .. I used to be able to sing in tune and I knew all of the words to all of the songs on the charts but I mean it wasn't anything special. It wasn't anything noticeable. And then when I was eight and a half I got this really big voice. And I mean .. nobody could believe I was singing because it was such a loud sound and I was about this big."
Candice: "Just hearing you warm up in the dressing room I couldn't believe it was you."
Charlotte: "(giggles) Thank you .. but uhh .. like I said that voice is completely different .. that voice is kind of like Celine
Dion .. Whitney Houston type of voice. And then I went to singing lessons when I was nine and a half and then this kind of voice.. umm came out when I was about ten. And so everybody was a bit surprised and ummm what was this our Charl. So umm .. it was .. it was a bit of a surprise to us all. But then I don't kind of see my voice as anything special because it's there and I can .. I can do it every day. And it .. you know I don't kind of go WOW! My voice is really different.. because it's just .. it's just natural and it's just what I do really."
Candice: "Charlotte .. we want you to go shopping now."
Charlotte: "Yay."
Candice: "We want you to go shopping. We want you to shop your brains out."
Charlotte: "Yaaaayyy."
Candice: "And have a wonderful holiday."
Charlotte: "Thank you."
Candice: "Thank you so much for being with us .. it was just a great treat. When we come back Charlotte Church will sing the title track from her new album."
{End of segment 1}
Candice: "And now Charlotte Church will sing Dream A Dream."
(Charlotte Sings)
(quietly to final musical fade out)
Clapping is heard as Candice walks back onto stage.
Candice: "Thank you so much. It's so beautiful. Was it written for you, Charlotte, that song?"
Charlotte: "Well actually it's an old piece of music by Favure's Pavanne. But ummm with the lyrics put uhh put to the tune for me. And uhh two song writers in
England they sang it to us and we lift it and team up with Billy through the other end of the company cause were under the same label. And umm so it all worked out real well in the end."
Candice: "I guess"
Charlotte: "And I recorded it with Billy and everything."
Candice: "So Charlotte you've performed for President Clinton. You're going to perform again for President Clinton....."
Charlotte: "Yeah."
Candice: "...in the next whirlwind of a couple of weeks. Prince Charles, the Pope.
Charlotte: "Mmmm Hmmmm."
Candice: "Do you ever have an out of body experience when you're performing for people like that?"
Charlotte: "I don't really get very nervous when I sing for these people. And I got nervous when I sang for the Pope because I didn't know the words to the song. And so I was frantically trying to learn it. It was Hark The Herald Angels Sing. And I just couldn't remember the words for the life of me and so I was backstage frantically learning the words .. going oh my God I'm gonna forget the words. And then what am I gonna do? I'm going to have to make them all up and sing about trees and gardens and everything.. and so I was like Oh No! But in the end I remembered them and so I was happy."
Candice: "And did you meet His Holiness?"
Charlotte: "Yeah it wasn't then we were supposed to meet him on the day of the concert. But he was too ill to meet us then. So we went back in January 99 and uhh we met him in the Vatican and it was absolutely amazing. Yeah it was absolutely amazing."
Candice: "And does one kiss his ring..?"
Charlotte: "Yeah, yeah, I got down and I kissed his ring and then uhh I took my great grandmother's rosary beads with me and he blessed them and he blessed me. Then he touched my face and said 'La Cantante' which is Italian meaning the singer. So it was an amazing experience. And when we told my Mom .. she's been a devout Catholic all her life she was almost crying."
Candice: "Is there anybody that you haven't performed for that you would like to perform for?"
Charlotte: "Oh there are many people. I mean I think it'd be really interesting performing for the
Dali Lama and umm I'd also like to perform for the Sultan of
Brunei cause I heard he gives really good presents."
Candice: "Me too. I wish I could sing."
Charlotte: "Like Diamond Rolexes and stuff. I
wouldn't wear it I'd just sell it on."
Candice: "Well Charlotte from what I understand you could buy your own diamond
Rolex and probably for all of us on this set."
Charlotte: "Well no because I mean all the money I earn goes into a trust for me until I'm 22. And so it's all kinda kept away .. but uhhh .. which is really good because I mean when I'm older I'll be able to do with it what I want. And I'm obviously not responsible enough. And I get an allowance of £60.00 a month which is around $95.00 from that. So I spend it on sweets and clothes and shoes and stuff."
Candice: "Why an American kid could hardly get a cup of coffee with that."
Charlotte: "giggles."
Candice: "Ummm do umm am I right that the greatest thrill for you in spite of all the people that you've performed for .. world leaders was at the MTV Music Awards?"
Charlotte: "Yeah. I mean the type of music that I sing isn't really what I listen to. I mean I do listen to classical you know when I'm gonna go to sleep or something but generally I listen to people like Joe Scott and Lauren Hill and Kaliss and Destiny's Child and all these different people cause I like R&B and hip hop and all that type of stuff. So when I went to the .. I've been to the MTV awards twice .. and its just amazing to see all these people that you listen to every day just standing there and sitting there and a couple of them came up to me and were saying 'You're so
talented' and I just kinda went uhhhhhh. And I met Will Smith back stage and I was always a big fan of Will Smith cause he's really cool and so I was just lost for words when he came up and spoke to me but he was really nice."
Candice: "Uhhh all right stay with us we'll be back in a minute."
