Open House with Gloria Hunniford
Re-Aired 23 January 2002

Gloria : "We were earlier saying that by the age of twelve Dame Julie of course had taken her first steps towards professional stardom, as of course that popular child performer we were talking about. Now to sing with such depth and range at such a young age is exceptionally rare. But joining us now is a young girl who shares that unique tallent. Her debut album has sold over three million copies .. and her second self titled album looks set to do even better. I know you're going to give a very special welcome to fourteen year old double platinum selling star Charlotte Church."
[
transcribers notes : At this point Charlotte is seen walking out onto the set wearing red pants and a off yellow blouse.]
Gloria : "Hi Charlotte .. how are you darling?"
Charlotte : "Thank You."
Dame Julie : "Hi Charlotte .. I have so longed to meet you. How are you?"
Charlotte : "I'm fine thank you. It's nice to see you."
Dame Julie : "You like to sit down?"
Gloria : "I think your Mom and your Nan are very excited that you're here today."
Charlotte : "Very.. very excited yes."
Dame Julie : "I've heard so much about you .. and I'm such a fan."
Charlotte : "Uh huh .. Thank you."
Dame Julie : "And I've been longing to meet you."
Charlotte : "Yeah .. it's good."
Gloria to Dame Julie : "Because there are a lot of comparisons to make. I mean I think you implied in a way that you were so busy with singing lessons that you do when you were growing up that there wasn't time for childhood as we know it. Do you regret that in a way?"
Dame Julie : "Well umm I can't regret it because it led to such wonderful things. Umm .. yeah I rather regret not having had a better school education ..."
[
transcriber's note : turning to Charlotte she continued]
Dame Julie : "and I'm sure your parents are probably .. yeah I hear you had to give up an exam today."
Charlotte : "Yeah. Well I'm doing it tomorrow. I missed math so I'm doing it tomorrow. But I've been quite busy with my exams and they've .. I've been happy. I've already gotten two results back. And I've gotten ninety-five percent in geography and I got seventy-five in..."
[Transcribers Note : word lost irretrievably as Dame Julie's voice overpowered Charlotte's for a moment in the recording.]
Dame Julie : "Oooooo Great."
Charlotte : "I'm very happy with that."
Gloria : "Can't do much better than that. How.. how difficult is it though to combine? Because .. because you're traveling all over the place as well."
Charlotte : "Mmmm .. it can be quite difficult. And when I'm on the road I have a private tutor who teaches me for three hours a day."
Dame Julie : "That's what happened to me too."
Charlotte : "And .. umm .. I'm quite lucky because my tutors quite young .. he's twenty-four. So it's not like really really serious all the time because if it was and if it was really lots of discipline then I don't think I could handle it but you know .. it's.."
Gloria : "It's tough enough though doing the work and doing the school work."
Charlotte : "Especially when you're in New York or somewhere fun and you wanna go out shopping or something and you have to sit and do three hours tutoring...."
Dame Julie : "Ha ha ha ha ha."
Charlotte : " .... then you just don't want to."
Dame Julie : "And you're travelling a lot these days doing that. Yeah."
Charlotte : "Mmm yeah a lot. But I've had a couple of weeks off now to study for exams and things. But .. umm .. I'm gonna .. gonna be recording my third album soon."
Dame Julie : "Ohhhh."
Charlotte : "So then it's gonna go all nuts again."
Dame Julie : "Isn't it fun?"
Charlotte : "It is fun. It is .."
Dame Julie : "How .. how .. what age were you when you started singing?"
Charlotte : "I was .. same as you .. eight."
Dame Julie : "Yes."
Charlotte : "Umm .. and then I started singing lessons when I was about nine and a half."
Dame Julie : "Right exactly what happened to me."
Charlotte : "And then when I was about ten .. that was when we realized I had a talent .. not just kind of like umm .. uhh like a chest voice."
Dame Julie : "Mmm ... hmm."
Charlotte : "I got this voice where I had a chest voice but then I went to singing lessons, and then I developed a soprano voice."
Dame Julie : "Yes."
Gloria : "How many octaves do you have?"
Charlotte : "About three and a half I think."
Gloria : "Three and a half."
Dame Julie : "That's wonderful yeah. It's a beautiful voice too."
Charlotte : "Thank You."
[Transcribers note : Charlotte smiled wide as she said thank you.]
Dame Julie : "And it's beautifully trained. You must have a wonderful teacher."
Charlotte : "Yeah .. yeah I do. Her names Louise Ryan. She's been teaching me since I was nine and a half."
Dame Julie : "Good."
Gloria : "There .. there are lot's of great comparisons though you know .. as you were as a child .. and as Charlotte is experiencing at the moment. It's the highlights also. I mean you've met everybody Charlotte. Haven't you."
Charlotte : "Yeah. I've been .. I've been really really lucky. I've got to meet the Pope which was amazing. Bill Clinton .. which was fabulous .. ummm .. Prince Charles .. the Queen .. Prince Phillip. I'm gonna say Prince Phillip was .. umm .. Prince Phillip and the Pope was my favorite."
Gloria : "Which way was he your favorite?"
Charlotte : "Well Prince Phillip was just really really lovely and really down to earth. He was nice."
Dame Julie : "And what .. what about the Pope? You're one up on me on that."
Charlotte : "Yeah it .. it was just an amazing experience because I mean my whole families Catholic. So then it was like the hugest honor possible. Umm he was just so weird just because he looked so Holy. And I felt real cleansed afterwards. I felt like a real angel.
Dame Julie : "Awwww."
Gloria : "Bet that lasted five minutes."
Charlotte : "Yes. Yes."
Dame Julie : "Oh I don't know about that."
Gloria : "When you look back on your childhood Julie .. well what stands out .. because you have big highlights of doing things and meeting people."
Dame Julie : "I think the same things that .. Char.. Charlotte's speaking about. That you know .. a Royal Command Performance or meeting .. meeting special people and uhh and uhh I'm going to be doing my biography fairly soon .. especially about the early years. And I think it's also all that hard work. You don't realize how much you're learning as you're learning. Only in retrospect do you realize how much."
Gloria : "Do you ever at any time Charlotte think Oh I would like to just forget about all the .."
Charlotte : "Ummm."
Gloria : ".. study and just sort of be the average teenager if you like?"
Charlotte : "I mean sometimes but I mean you get over that. Everybody goes through those kind of stages. Ummm .. but sometimes it's really hard work and you're thinking I just want to go home and be normal. Umm it's never kind of I wanna go home and go to school. No."
Dame Julie : "Ha ha ha ha ha."
Charlotte : "It's just that I wanna go home."
Dame Julie : "And whoose luckier than we?"
Charlotte : "Mmmm."
Dame Julie : "I mean we both have a wonderful life and it makes it so special."
Charlotte : "Yeah it is."
Dame Julie : "And it's kind of a wonderful gift."
Gloria : "Well Charlotte I know you've got to get ready to sing here .. So what are you actually going to sing for us today? "
[Transcribers Note : Dame Julie had no idea yet what Charlotte had planned to sing but she was exuberant with Joy when Charlotte said the following.]
Charlotte : "I'm going to be singing I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady."
Dame Julie : "Ohhh ... thats lovely."
Gloria : "Now would that be normally in your repertoire .."
Charlotte : "Ummm."
Gloria : "..or have you worked that up specially for us?"
Charlotte : "Well I've kind of worked it up specially for you. But I used to sing it when .. in my early days when I was about ten or eleven."
Dame Julie : Ha ha ha."
Gloria : "Your early days of music I know.
Dame Julie : "In her early days."
Gloria : "Well ladies and gentlemen Charlotte Church. Thank you Charlotte for joining us."
[
Transcriber's Note : Here there was a break and file segment two (below) started when Charlotte returned to the set.]
Gloria : "And now with her tributive chorus [name unknown] here she is singing a song from the musical My Fair Lady .. lets hear it for Charlotte Church and the classic I Could Have Danced All Night."
[
Transcribers Note : Dame Julie gave Charlotte a standing ovative welcome back on the set.]
Charlotte singing : "

Bed bed .. I couldn't go to bed.
My heads too light to try to set it down.
Sleep sleep I couldn't sleep tonight
Not for all the jewels in the crown.

I could have danced all night.
I could have danced all night.
And still have begged for more.
I could have spread my wings,
And done a thousand things
I've never done before.
I'll never know what made it so exciting.
Why all at once my heart took flight.
I only know, when he, began to dance with me,
I could have danced, danced, danced, all night.

"
[
Transcribers Note : Clapping happily Dame Julie smiled wide while Gloria stood and invited Charlotte back on the interview set.]
Gloria : "Come over here and join us Charlotte."
Dame Julie : "That was absolutely fantastic. Wonderful wonderful."
[
Transcribers Note : Charlotte there upon sat between Graham Huxton and Dame Julie.]
Dame Julie : "It's not an easy song is it..?"
Charlotte : "Oh no."
Gloria : "That was truly wonderful. Now your Mum and your Nan will be saying .. 'There she is our Charlotte sitting between Graham and Julie Andrews.' "
Charlotte : "Yes .. yes .. we're all big fans of your show."
Graham : "Although you shouldn't watch it."
Gloria : "Honestly it's been a really special day for us. Thanks not only to Charlotte and to Graham but of course to Dame Julie for joining us."
Dame Julie : "And thanks to you Gloria."
Gloria : "Hope you'll join us tomorrow at 2:15 we'll do it all over again. Bub bye see you then."
[
Transcribers Note : from that point until the screen turns blue with the word THAMES appearing on screen .. music played and the show ending credits aired across the bottom of the screen. Though the group is still shown on stage they are not heard from further.][end of transcript]
