Fame came when she was just 12, fresh-faced and innocent in
ankle socks and a school frock.
But the early teens are a time of big change for a girl an
even her parents must struggle to recognise Charlotte Church
aged 15 as the child singing prodigy sold as The Voice of an
Angel.
With hair transformed using tongs and extensions into a frizzy
mass of ringlets, and makeup with includes lipstick, heavy
gloss and smoky eyes she has clearly developed that common
adolescent desire to fast forward her appearance.
The new look was unveiled at a party in the notorious Moomba
nightclub in Los Angeles marking the launch of a new album by
the pop group N*SYNC.
It is the same club where Mick Jagger made his first approach
to Sophie Dahl and a favourite hang out of stars like Leonardo
DiCaprio.
Impressive company for a 15-year-old, but it may have her cold
as she has enthused at length about her 'enormous crush' on
Prince William who wasn't there.
The girl whose operatic voice has entertained the Queen, the
Pope and a U.S. president has shifted her musical tastes as
well as her dress style. Destiny's Child are her current
idols.
She appears to have less tiem for solo girl pop stars, some of
whom she crictised recently for overt sexuality in their
videos.
With a 10 Million fortune, Miss Church will have little
difficulty maintaining her fashion requirements. She already
has two stylists advising her on outfits (one in the UK and
one in America), and describes herself as a clothesaholic.
'I do all the regular things that teenagers do, like having
sleepovers with my friends," she said in an interview.
"We gossip about clothes and boys and music. At the end
of the day I'm just a teenage trying to work out what it all
means.'
Currently studying for her GCSEs, she has expressed an
interest in going to university or perhaps developing an
acting career. - A. Boshoff
Glamourous
Charlotte The
Western Mail (7.26.01)
Charlotte Church once relied on her schoolgirl image and
innocent persona to win her fans.
Now she has discovered the pull of the celebrity lifestyle and
is relishing every opportunity.
The latest photographs of Charlotte show that the striped
school dress has gone forever, to be replaced by glamorous
ball gowns and expensive designer gear.
But at the age of 15 years and five months, to the casual
observer it seems as if Charlotte may be becoming old before
her years. Although
she has been adamant that she will not be following in the
steps of look-but-don't-touch pop princess Britney Spears, she
has begun to navigate a fine line between wholesome Cardiff
schoolgirl, designer clotheshorse and "it" girl.
The latest pictures show Charlotte's more "mature"
look - tousled curly hair with extensions woven in, smoky eyes
and glossy red lips over a fashionably cut top and jeans.
The pictures were taken at the infamous Moomba club in Los
Angeles, where Charlotte was at the star-studded launch party
for the new album by American boy band N*Sync, one of whose
members, coincidentally, is the boyfriend of Britney Spears.
She is mixing with the type of people whose talent possibly
comes more from how they appear than what comes from within.
Charlotte Enfieldler, style director at Glamour Magazine,
thinks Charlotte is on the right track, but has a little way
to go before she gets her look completely right.
"It's a great outfit," she enthused. "It's
funky without being overtly sexy - that's where Britney goes
wrong.
"She's got all the right elements, the batwing top, the
boot-cut jeans. But itundefineds the hair, it's too much. If
she had it in a pony tail or long and straight, then she would
get away with wearing
that much make-up as well."
She added, "Girls start playing with make-up and clothes
when they are 10 or 12. But Charlotte's not in her normal
environment. Her face is great, but hair can make such a
difference.
"People in her situation grow up fast - it's the same
with models. If you are surrounded with people wearing amazing
clothes, with people to do their hair and make-up, you are
going to want all that as well."
Ms Enfieldler continued, "Charlotte's a curvy girl. But
it would be horrible for her to think she's overweight. The
top's not tight and she's hardly showing any flesh. Yes, the
trousers look tight, but
they are well cut."
She concluded, "She's wearing what any fashion-conscious
British teenager would. I say, go for it Charlotte!"
