Charlotte meets President Clinton at the White House ~ June 1999 ... November 1999 ~ Release of Charlotte's second album "Charlotte Church"

Left: Charlotte as Katie in her first acting role for the 1999 Christmas episode of the UK TV series "Heartbeat"
Right: Charlotte turns on London's Oxford Street Christmas lights ~ December 2000

And it all started here
on January 13th 1997,
with Charlotte singing "Somewhere (there's a place for us)" on this very program - complete with her original highly vibrato voice!

The expression on Charlotte's face, especially above right, was a joy to behold...
... as, off-camera, Richard chuckles like a hen sitting on a new-laid egg!

Charlotte: "Oh my God! Oh, my God!"
Richard: "I know - I know..."
Judy: "You were so little!"
Charlotte: "I know... I went ...errrrr..." Everyone broke down in laughter, until finally...
Richard says: "I loved you in that first 'phone-in when you - she says, "Will you sing Pie Jesu for us please baby - and you go (falsetto) 'all right then.'"

More laughter, then Charlotte says: "I had the highest voice in the history of the world then!"
Richard: "Ahhhh..."

Judy:"It has lowered, actually, hasn't it?"
Charlotte: "Yeah, it has a bit."
Judy: "Quite a lot."
Charlotte: "Well, it depends - it depends on how, like, tired I am or jet-lagged an' stuff... Sometimes I'll wake and I'll sound like Marlon Brando or something... Ha ha"

Richard: "You're - you're getting beautiful."
Charlotte: "Thank you very much..."
Judy: "I think you're going to look rather like Catherine Zeta Jones, actually, when you're older."
Charlotte: "Do you think - oh that'll be good..."
Judy: "It's the Welsh in you..."
Richard and Judy: "Yeah."
Charlotte: (very demurely and looking down): "Thank you..."

Judy: "So look - so you come over - this - this... your new album, which is called Dream a Dream, has already... Has it gone platinum in the States, already?"
Charlotte: "It's gone platinum the States, which is one million in four weeks... So we're very happy, yeah."

Murmurs of agreement and appreciation from both Richard and Judy...

Judy: "Incredible!"
Richard: "Who's - who's your audience there?"
Charlotte: "My audience, er, I mean it, it ranges there... It's really, really different from the UK, because... I mean, it goes from like five year olds to twelve year olds..."
Judy: "Yeah..."
Charlotte: "And then - and then there's - there's those who're like teenagers there, who all write loads of letters saying... 'Oh, I used to be into Rap and Hip-Hop, and - but - then - an' I still like that, but then you've introduced me to classical music...' I was like - 'Oh! My God.' - So you get lots like that. And then we get, then we get, you know, lots of, like, middle aged fans and then older fans. So it's - it's of all ages."

Richard: "You get to sell records though - I mean, you're on all the talk shows. You're on Jay Leno, aren't you...
Charlotte: "Yeah, yeah..."
Richard: "... and Letterman... an' - - - Oprah..."
Charlotte: "Yeah... I've been on Jay Leno five times, Letterman [Ed: David Letterman] twice and I'm going to be doing Oprah again - next month. It's going to be my fourth time."
Richard: "How do they treat you? Do they - do they patronise you at all, because you're young. Or are they... are they OK with you?"
Charlotte: "Well - erm - I think - the Americans - generally you know, are very gushing and everything... so...
Richard: "Yeah."
Charlotte: "I - it's not... they don't mean to be patronising - but - er - well, they're not really..."
Richard: "I know exactly what you're saying..."
Charlotte: "... but they... they have to be very... 'oh, everything's wonderful and lovely'. Which is... you know... I mean... but they're great over there and they're... the audiences are fabulous... an', you know, they're all really, really kind and everything..."
Richard: "They know how to treat their daytime hosts over there..."
Judy, laughing: "They get loads of money..."
Richard: "No! Not that... I wasn't talking about that! I was talking about Oprah... you say the audience goes nuts when Oprah arrives."
Charlotte: "They go MAD! - I mean - they treat her like a goddess, because, I mean, she'll come in and people will start crying hysterically 'cos she's there and - they all just run up and go and hug her... and it's mad... and you're like... 'All right now people - calm down!'"

Richard: "When we go anywhere - they sort of go..."
Richard sticks his nose in the air as h
e and Judy laugh together, echoing...: "Oh, 'ullo..." indicating that we Brits don't rate chat-show hosts quite so highly as the Americans!
Richard adds: "As it should be... as it should be..."
Judy: "Well look. You've... you're growing up - you've had to grow up very quickly - especially this year. You've had a... you've had a bad time... er...
Richard: "Ummm..."
Charlotte: "Yeah..."
Judy: "Erm..."
Richard: "Yeah... court case... yes"
Judy: "But I thought you handled yourself incre.... When I saw you on the news reports, you handled yourself extremely well - you were very, very grown up..."
Charlotte, rather demurely: "Thank you."
Judy: "... in your response to... but was it a big... was it very stressful for you?"
Charlotte: "It was, I mean, for anybody of any age, going through a big court case is... very, very difficult, and so...
Richard: "Ummm."
Charlotte: "... and then, the Press made a big, massive thing of it... and then..."
Richard: "Oh! They would, wouldn't they?"
Charlotte: "... and of course, it was all very one-sided and it was all very... erm... nasty and vicious towards my Mother in particular,
Judy: "Yeh..."
Charlotte: "... Which..."
Judy: "Yeh!"
Charlotte: "... Which was really, really hurtful for me. Especially for her, obviously. And she was on every headline of every paper... And..."
Richard, nodding: "Yeh."
Charlotte: "... none of it was true... I mean... if she... I mean, if she was greedy, then she wouldn't have set up a trust-fund for me - for all my money - which she has.
Judy: "Yeah..."
Charlotte: "So, I mean, it was all very untrue and it was..."
Judy: "I think... I think it's... very... it's, it's, it's very... difficult for Mothers of, er, of people who've become famous very young... because all their protective instincts are obviously there..."
Charlotte: "Exactly."
Judy: "... and they've got to defend you and fight for you. And yet, what the Press perceives that as is... is - pushy..."

Charlotte: "Yeah but she... but she's not. She's really just...
Judy: "No..."
Charlotte: "... trying to protect me and everything..."
Richard: "Ummm."
Charlotte: "... and, you know, she's - she's she's never like... been... erm... wanted to be my manager... never, ever, ever!"
Richard: "Ummm."
Charlotte: "So, I mean, but it's... it's, it's great having her around to travel with me, 'cos she does protect me and she does, you know, look out for my best, best interests. An', I mean, although having my parents travelling with me 24/7 can be a bit of a pain (grins devilishly!), sometimes, but, erm, you know, generally it's good and we have - we all have a good relationship..."

Richard: "Well anyway, it's all settled now..."
Charlotte: "Yeah - well the whole..."
Richard: "... it's behind you..."
Charlotte: "We're really happy that..."
Richard: "Yeah - you can move on."Charlotte: "... it's all over, and, yeah..."
Judy: "Yeah..."

Charlotte: "... and we've got Christmas now."
Judy: "Yeah..."
Richard: "What you..."
Judy: "In your new house..."
Richard: "In your new house that you bought - yeh?"
Charlotte: "Yeah - well, that's another thing..."
Richard: "Go on..."
Charlotte: "... that was another bit... where it's like... I've got a seven bedroom mansion, apparently... I'm like... (Charlotte's eyes opened wide here and her eyes reached for the ceiling!) 'I WISH...'. It's not quite. I mean, it's like five bedrooms and - basically, all it was - was - we... we couldn't fit anything else in the old house... So we moved house. And - erm - I mean... It's not a mansion at all. It's just like... you know..."

Richard: "And what have you got? Have you got the top floor? Is that, is that..."
Charlotte: "I - I've got the attic..."
Richard: "You've got the attic!"
Judy interjects, laughing: "Described as 'The Bears House'"
Richard: "I read you'd got the run of the top floor..."
Charlotte: "Yeah! I had the run of the top floor and my parents lived on the lower level... No, I've just got the attic - the attic's my bedroom."

Richard: "Ah! You'll get used to - you are used to all that now, aren't you. It doesn't matter, really..."
Charlotte: "Yeah - quite used to..."
Judy: "Ah... You look very happy, anyway..."
Charlotte: "Yeah... I am... I'm really happy at the moment, because everything, I mean, it's going well and everything at home's good."
Richard: "Good! And where are you spending Christmas? Here?"
Charlotte: "I'm spending Christmas at home - definitely - in Cardiff with my..."
Richard: "That's nice"

Charlotte: "... family and... all of my family are going to sleep round - erm - in our house - yeah..."
Richard: "Excellent... But you're going back to America in about three hours aren't you?"
Charlotte: "Yeah, I am... I'm going back to LA. And I just came from Detroit..."
Richard - grinning: "Thank you, for doing that..."
Charlotte - grinning too: "You're welcome... You're very welcome..."
Judy: "You look remarkably healthy - considering..."
Charlotte: "Thank you."
Judy: "... that you do all this travelling..."
Fast-fire interchange and more laughter between the three of them... concluding with...
Richard: "It'll start showing in about ten years..."
Judy: "... your old heart, your liver... I couldn't do with that"
Richard: "Yeah."

Judy: "Erm... look... so... yeah... so, you - you - you..." (Tongue well twisted here!) "Your record's called Dream a Dream... Your singing that for us at the end of the show."
Charlotte: "Yes."
Judy: "I read that you - you're fed up of being regarded as some kind of angel, because of 'Voice of an Angel'"
Richard: "Become a joke, hasn't it?"

Charlotte: "Well... well, it's - it's not - I'm not really like fed up of it. It's just, like, I can't - I can't like mention my angel status without joking... and I say like... my wings have gone in to hiding now - or - my halo's slipped, slightly... or something like that..."
Richard:
"Yeah..."
Charlotte: "So... erm... It's just kind of funny now."
Judy: "You're still just a teenager aren't you, let's face it..."
Richard: "When are you fifteen?"

Charlotte: "Fifteen? ... On February 21st."
Richard: "Well, as I said, you are looking beautiful..."
Charlotte: "Thank you..."
Richard: "Urm... have you got a boyfriend, yet?"
Charlotte: "Well... no, I don't because I go to an all-girl school and everything. I've got lots of friends, who are boys and stuff like that, but then..."
Richard: "You're not dating, then?"

Charlotte: "Oh! It's too much hassle, with the crying and... the drama and everything..."
Judy: "Oh - at school, you mean... All your girlfriends... Oh yeah, tell us about it!"
Charlotte: "Yeah - so..."
Judy: "Ah! - our girls are like that..." Charlotte chuckles...
Judy, turning to Richard: "Oh no! - Listen, there's plenty of time for that, Richard!"
Charlotte: "Yeah..."
Richard - surrendering, with hands in the air: "Naturally curious..." More light banter...
Richard again: "Well - OK... Thanks very much for being here..."

Charlotte: "You're welcome - thank you..."
Richard: "... and you're going to sing at the end of the program - and folks - she sings live... That's all she does... that's all..."
