Charlotte's role in programme:
Featured Guest
It
would be hard to tell, by watching Charlotte's second
appearance on Later, that this was filmed literally only
hours after her appearance on Jay
Leno 30 October 2000 but indeed it was. I had heard from
Bill , one our of our loyal viewers, who got to attend both
tapings that she was going to make a second appearance on
"Later" so its been a month long wait to catch
this appearance and believe me it has been worth it.
As I
mentioned above this is Charlotte's second appearance on
Later. Pictures of her first can be found here.
Many people aren't familiar with the Later program so I'll
just give you a really quick intro.
Later
is as it's name intends, is the last late late programme on
NBC. It comes on AFTER Conan O'Brien! Normally you would
expect to find some washed up or extreme rookie host on such
a programme but Later is a welcome exception. Host Cynthia
Garett, who follows in a long line of Later hosts, including
Bob Costas and Greg Kinnar is perhaps one of the best kept
secrets on the late nigh circuit. If you read her bio and
her education she is more that qualified to be a lead news
anchor but I'm supposing with her excellent personality she
would rather do a late show such as this. The bottom line
here is that this is a show that deserves more attention
that it gets, I recommend it to anyone and lets hope this is
just the beginning of a long network broadcasting
career for Cynthia.
Anyways...on
to the appearance. Before I begin, let me say that due to
the large amount of dialogue I will not be doing a
transcript of the entire conversation, rather you can watch
the entire thing on Video! The show began with
Cynthia asking guests outside the studio to name their fav Christmas
carol and sing it. Perhaps the reason for this was to
show just how BAD these people sing them compared to just
how GOOD Charlotte does. Nevertheless, it was a good
introduction and for a while there I thought she was going
to do something akin to "Jay Walking" which would
have been even more entertaining to watch. Just imagine the
responses if she started asking things like "Where in
the world is Wales?".

Next,
Cynthia joined Charlotte on stage for a warm welcome. Like
many of the other recent hosts, Cynthia was surprised at how
grown up Charlotte was. Charlotte and Cynthia both sat down
to have a chat before the two performances. The great thing
about "Later" is that musical guests as well as
all guests are given much more than a 5 minute interview so
you really get a good idea about the person being profiled.
Cynthia and Charlotte's discussion was really interesting
and engaging much like the first appearance on later.
A
particularly amusing part came when Charlotte talked about
USA talk shows such as Springer and Murray Povich. Charlotte
told Cynthia that they are so much better than UK talk shows
of this type and she demonstrated a little twirl of her
wrist that immediately brought the crowd to laughter.
Next up
Cynthia presented Charlotte with the "Later List"
a series of questions. Instead of transcribing them and
massively messing them up the
video has the complete version.
The
performance section came next with Charlotte starting off
with a solo of "dream a dream". This was the first
time solo on USA TV so it was quite a treat. After
"dream a dream" was finished Charlotte returned
with Cynthia to discuss her favourite picture in the CD
insert. Charlotte instantly chose this one:

The
next performance was "Winter Wonderland" and you
could tell Charlotte really got into this one right from the
start. Steve of Team USA had this to say:
"Her
performance of Winter Wonderland was without a doubt the
finest and most energetic singing she's ever done on
television."
"Her
voice in this song was louder and cleaner than on the
album and much more spirited as well. Anyone who watched
this show will have a better understanding of why those of
us who've seen her in concert recently are in such
complete and total awe of her talent. "
That
pretty much sums up this entire programme rather nicely.
Simply put Charlotte is getting better each and every time
she steps up to the mic. We were expecting an awesome
appearance on Later and Charlotte didn't disappoint. I also
give a great bit of recognition to Cynthia Garett. I'm
really impressed with her after watching many
"Later" programmes during the past couple of
months. if you're listening Cynthia..keep up the good work
and make sure Charlotte gets invites early and often :)
