Who
do you think of when I mention the phrase
"matured soprano voice"? Well, this
"angel", at the tender age of 14, has
already performed for the Prince of Wales, and even
U.S President Bill Clinton and his wife. Famous for
her superb soprano voice, this young lady is none
other than Charlotte Church!
This
MTV award winner for Best Newcomer, and Artist of the
year 2000 at the first Annual Classical Brits Awards,
is an all-rounder. She scored high marks and made a
humble comment that her education is as important as
her singing. Judging from my personal experience as a
choir member, I feel Charlotte's voice is perfect for
singing ethereal songs. Despite an extraordinary voice
and passion for opera songs, she does not only listen
to opera music or other "slow" songs.
Charlotte, like any other teenager, has other likings
such as a taste for pop music by Natalie Imbruglia,
the Corrs, Puff Daddy, Gloria Estefan and Catatonia.
This
young and gifted Welsh young lady, loved music ever
since she was three-and-a-half years old. "I sang
'Ghostbusters' with my cousin at a seaside holiday
camp in Caernarfon. When we'd finished, she left the
stage, but I refused to go. They had to drag me
off!"
Five
years later, Charlotte Church was already making a
name for herself at local karaoke competitions. She
saw a TV show which made a calling for talented kids.
No one was around at that very moment and so she
plucked up the courage and called them. She simply sat
down and sang over the phone for the producers to
listen! When she was invited down to the show, her
parents were the last to know about it but
miraculously, this led to even more television
performances!

Charlotte
Church has cut 3 albums so far; Voice of An Angel,
Charlotte Church and her most recent Dream a
Dream. Dream a Dream is a collection of seasonal
songs including a duet with 12 year old US country
music sensation Billy Gillman. But her painstaking and
hectic schedule doesn't stop her from raising funds
for charity.
She
has travelled from her hometown in Llandaff, Cardiff,
to perform at the London Palladium, the Royal Albert
Hall, Cardiff Arms Park, Washington D.C., Japan and
finally Singapore!
At
the press conference in Singapore, it was indeed
astonishing to see her in the flesh. I did not expect
her to be friendly and jovial, but I was pleasantly
surprised. This graceful but child-like singer,
answered her questions very well, and knew how to
answer impromptu questions maturely. But her
child-like nature popped up at certain instances, like
when she said "I still hate Mathematics!"
Charlotte
Church who has a kind heart, supports charities
involving young people, and feels a certain level of
satisfaction in doing so. After performing at various
countries, does she still take every event as a new
challenge? "Definitely! I want to meet new
audience but I have to be extra careful when there is
criticism by some people, if they happen to watch my
performance repeatedly." During the press
conference, she mentioned her liking to shop, sleep,
go to parties in school, movies, and playing tennis
and squash.
She
likes English(and particularly poetry) and Geography,
for she travels everywhere. I asked her which country
she would choose if she had a choice to live in it.
She rattled off a long list! She couldn't make up her
mind but Singapore is one of them, besides countries
like Africa, Japan, Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia.
She revealed that she had done about 10 concerts and
15 - 20 television appearances this year alone.
Charlotte
Church performed live in Singapore at a Charity Gala
Dinner. The dinner organised by The Substation, is
raising money for its Endowment Fund. Charlotte was,
of course, very supportive.
Thanks
Charlotte! Hope to see you again in Singapore soon!
