Weekly Media Feature - (3/11/2001)

This is my Moment: Charlotte Church
Sunday Peolpe (UK) 3.11.01
Charlotte Church,15, is famous as the "Voice of an Angel". Here, the Cardiff-born singing star tells JULIA KUTTNER of the moments she'll never forget...

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT

Introducing myself to and sitting down with three strangers in a Los Angeles hotel who I thought were writers I was due to have a meeting with. I just started chatting away and it wasn't until my mum arrived that I realised I was with the wrong people! I wanted the ground to swallow me up!

SCARIEST MOMENT

This was when I was in a car crash on the way back from my ninth birthday party. Mum was driving, and my pregnant aunty Caroline was in the back with me and some friends. The car hit the central reservation, smashed into a lorry and ended up on a bank. The car was battered but amazingly we all got out without a scratch. I had glass in my shoe and the ambulance man said it was amazing that we hadn't been killed. We had been happy and laughing one minute, and facing death the next. But I soon got over it and bounced back, as children do.

MOST EXPENSIVE MOMENT

Buying my house was my most expensive moment. It was an investment but no way did it cost pounds 3 million, which is what I read in one glossy magazine! It took me more than a year to collect stuff for the house and it's quite full now. My bedroom has a Chinese theme but I will probably change it to an Indian theme later. I live there with my parents, and our family are nearby and often come round. That's what I love - being part of the family. They make the house a home.

FAVOURITE MOMENT

I got to speak to the Popstars band, Hear 'Say on the phone, which was wicked because I'm such a big fan of the show. In fact, I'm even doing my English oral exam on Popstars. I was going to do something intellectual like "How philosophy affects our everyday lives" but I thought the class would enjoy this subject far more! I'll talk about how they all appeal to teenagers. I spoke to Noel and Danny and Kym and Suzanne. Noel is my heart-throb, and I really hope I can meet him one day. He's a Cardiff boy and when we were younger we went to the same pub for family parties. But we didn't know each other.

HAPPIEST MOMENT

Well I've had lots - but family parties are the best. One of my happiest performing moments was singing Summertime with Wyclef Jean at Carnegie Hall in New York last year. I wasn't singing in a classical way and I had all my hair slicked over, a grown-up backless top on and punk eye make-up. I felt so...adult!

FAVOURITE SHOWBIZ MOMENT

No question - meeting Ricky Martin! I've met him four times and each time he comments on how much I've grown! Seeing Robbie Williams in a Jacuzzi in Los Angeles was pretty memorable, too. He was sitting there in just his underpants. I was really shocked. He called me over and I kept saying to Mum "I can't possibly go over to speak to him!" My mum said "Go over - I want to meet him!" So I did - and he was lovely, charming and gorgeous.

LONELIEST MOMENT

Every time there's a lot of pressure on me I get lonely because there's nobody else around of my age going through the same stresses. Sometimes I take my six best friends on the road with me, but they can only come in the school holidays. I'm not the sort who gets down, though, and I rarely cry.

MOST AWKWARD BOY MOMENT

It can be really tricky when boys come over to me at discos. I don't know what's worse - the ones who are over-confident and strut over and just start talking away at me, or the ones who stand and stare!
