"Just
wait till you hear her sing!" was Phyllis Logans comment on playing
Charlotte Church's screen mum in this week's Heartbeat. She was
obviously very impressed. Phyllis
is no stranger to working in a long-running drama - - she played Lady Jane in
four series of Lovejoy - - but these days she prefers working on a
variety of projects. "It's
nice when everything's different," said Phyllis. "A
location's a location, that always feels the same, but I like working with
different people. "Working
on Heartbeat was so nice and everybody was really welcoming," she
said. Considering
the cast have been together so long, it's a very pleasant atmosphere to work
in."
Praise
One thing
that seemed a little strange at first, was filming Christmas in August - but it
did have it's advantages; particularly for her young son. "My
son, Davey, toddled on to the set and said," Look Mummy, a big fir
Christmas tree," she laughed. "He was
very excited, but I'm sure it must have been a bit odd for him." Phyllis'
delight at having Davey around is obvious. "I
wouldn't commit to a long-running show that would take me away from home,"
she explained. "I think it's important fro me to be with him."
She had
nothing but praise for co-star Charlotte. "It
really didn't feel like I was acting with someone who hadn't acted before."
Phyllis said. "Charlotte's an outgoing girl and confident in a lovely way
and because of that she's good at what she does and that shows in her acting.
Although
Charlotte wasn't exactly enamored with the 60's fashion in Heartbeat,
Phyllis, who's 42, is more complimentary and enjoyed wearing the authentic
costumes. "Some
of the 60's cloths are great, particularly the boots with elasticated tops and I
liked the colourful frocks. But I was more of a 70's teenager," she
explained.
This week's Heartbeat
episode focuses on the preparation for a carol concert hosted by Lord
Ashfordby - - but first there are mysteries to be solved. Deer on the Lord's
estate are being shot but there's no venison ending up on Aidensfield tables, so
what was the poacher's true purpose?
And
following her parents painful separation, Katie Kendall (Charlotte Church), who
was due to sing at the concert, vanishes...
