Just when you thought that Charlotte Church couldn't possibly be more charismatic, beautiful and true, she goes ahead and completes a performance such as the one witnessed today, March 17, 2000, by millions of Americans on NBC's Later Today Show. Simply put, this has got to go down as one of the most intimate and charming television interviews/performances of Charlottes' career. You're probably wondering why we would devote an entire article to just one show. The answer is two fold - firstly Charlotte hasn't really done a segment like this, here in the U.S., in quite a while and - secondly, this event was never posted by Sony on their website so a great many of her fans may well have missed it.
Charlotte entered the studio after receiving the same introduction that has followed her around the world. Asha Blake, co-host of Later Today told the audience that Charlotte had accomplished more in these last two short years than most people do in their entire lifetimes. Then, smiling as always, Charlotte bounced onto the stage to great applause. Asha appeared to be overwhelmed by Charlotte, exclaiming "Your such a cutie pie!" Charlotte opened by talking about when she was in Italy and everyone would grab her cheeks - a rather humorous aside to start the show. Next Asha asked Charlotte about her earliest beginnings as a singer. Charlotte mentioned, as she has before, that she got her start singing "Ghostbusters" when she was only three. "I can't really remember much from my childhood." said Charlotte when prompted further. However, Charlotte did go on to tell yet another humorous story about being in a club, dancing to the Conga, when her hair clips fell out and she had to go look for them on the floor with everyone stepping on her. Asha then moved on to ask Charlotte one of the most commonly asked questions: "Do you want to do a Pop Album?" Charlotte replied "I'm not sure, however I can sing in a different voice". She went on to say that before she started voice training she had a voice akin to that of Whitney Houston, "Like Whitney Houston, but nowhere near to Whitney Houston", said Charlotte as modest as ever. "I could [sing Pop] if I wanted to, but right now I'm happy with what I'm doing." Next Asha asked Charlotte for a quick "singing lesson". Charlotte immediately got up from her chair and showed Asha some of the skills she uses to bring out that beautiful voice. (See Pics Below)
After this quick "singing lesson", Asha commented on Charlotte's previous acting debut in the U.S. on "Touched by an Angel". Charlotte said, "It was really fun to do "Touched by an Angel." and then went on to say, "Obviously we have a lot of scripts to look through but we don't want to rush into it [another acting role]. Right now we're just looking for the right role."
The next part of the interview was most interesting for the viewers - especially the dedicated fans of Charlotte. It was a question and answer type quiz where Charlotte had to complete the sentence that Asha gave her.
Here's how it went:Asha: "In the shower I sing_______"
Charlotte: "I don't"
Asha: "My Mom would be so mad at me if I _______"
Charlotte: "Act Cheeky" she then went on to say "I think I'm a really really good child, I'm not rebellious or anything but there are times when I act a bit cheeky"
Asha: "Most people would be surprised to know that______"
Charlotte: "I bite my nails" she then went on to comment how nice they looked today though.
Asha: "Nobody knows that I can_______"
Charlotte: "Dance; I used to Dance up until I was about six. I used to do Ballet, Tap, Modern , Jazz."
Asha: "Backstreet Boys or N'SYNC?"
Charlotte: "N'SYNC, I've met N'SYNC and they were lovely!"
Asha: "Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra?"
Charlotte: "Frank Sinatra"
That ended the quiz and they took a short commercial break. Back on air, Charlotte was introduced once again and it was announced that she would sing "Danny Boy" in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day. She was accompanied by a harpist who played quite beautifully. As far as the rendition of "Danny Boy" went, quality wise, it was the best that I heard the entire day - and trust me - being part Irish I heard plenty of others singing "Danny Boy" during this, the first St. Patrick's Day of the new millennium. Don't take my word for it though - watch the video below of the performance, compiled by Joe. In conclusion, Charlotte never ceases to amaze me. She continues to draw new fans everyday and shows like today's just accelerate the attraction. I've never seen anyone with such universal appeal and I don't think any of us will for quite some time. - Mark |
