Charlotte was back performing in her
home town of Cardiff on November 28th, 2004. The Royal Gala marked
the end of a weekend of celebrations for the opening of the
Millennium Centre in the Welsh Capital City. Charlotte and other
entertainers from Wales and around the World gave a spectacular
performance to a capacity crowd in the amazing new venue.
Charlotte performed two songs - 'Out Here On My Own', from the movie
'Fame' and, 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from 'The Wizard of Oz'.
'Out Here On My Own' was featured in the televised highlights shown
on BBC1 Wales.
We have Charlotte's performance of 'Out Here On My Own' together
with a couple of news items, one recorded before and one after the
event.

Royals attend Millennium Centre big opening night
THE Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the
Prince the Wales were guests of honour at the £106m Wales
Millennium Centre (WMC) in Cardiff Bay for an evening of
entertainment marking the climax of opening weekend
celebrations.
The royal party travelled in on the train and ignored protests
from campaign group Fathers 4 Justice to attend the evening of
entertainment.
Cardiff girl Charlotte Church belted out Out Here on My Own
from Fame the Musical and Somewhere over the Rainbow from the
Wizard of Oz.
Guests to walk along the red carpet included William and Ffion
Hague, Charlotte Church's mother Maria, Rocco Forte, former
Wales rugby star Ieuan Evans and newly-appointed Wales
football manager John Toshack.
A group of Fathers 4 Justice protesters in Santa suits
gathered outside the centre with banners reading "Put the
father back into xmas" and playing loud, electronic versions
of Christmas songs.
A South Wales Police spokeswoman said three others who had
mounted nearby buildings were arrested on suspicion of
criminal damage after coming down voluntarily.
Four F4J campaigners, also dressed as Father Christmas,
earlier caused the Severn Bridge, which links England to
Wales, to be closed for some five hours.
The doors to the centre were officially opened on Friday
afternoon. On Saturday a massive firework display was held and
people gathered outside the centre to sing with a 3,000-strong
choir.

Opening Night of the Millennium!
By Jenny Longhurst
CHARLOTTE Church, Bryn Terfel, Michael Ball,
Sian Phillips and a galaxy of international stars will be
waiting in the wings when the curtain goes up at the Wales
Millennium Centre next weekend with a right Royal gala.
After years of waiting, three days of celebrations to mark the
multi-million-pound development start on Friday, November 26,
with Cymry for the World - a concert featuring the BBC
National Orchestra of Wales under David Charles Abel, Bryn
Terfel, Catrin Finch, Denis O'Neill, the WNO and two
Birmingham Royal Ballet stars dancing the Nutcracker pas de
deux.
On Saturday, November 27, it's the turn of Wales' Mr Music,
Owain Arwel Hughes, when he conducts the Cory Band and a
6000-strong choir in Hymns and Arias, in the Oval Basin.
Many Welsh choirs from the Ardwyn to the Cardiff Polyphonic
will be taking part and everyone watching will be invited to
join in, swelling the voices to around 10,000.
The opening weekend culminates in Stage for the World, a
glittering Royal Gala on Sunday, November 28, when conductor
Carlo Rizzi strikes up the band and gives the signal to bring
on the stars.
Charlotte, Michael and Bryn will be joined by Jonathan Pryce,
Ruthie Henshall, the Welsh National Opera, members of the
Royal and Kirov Ballets and more in a spectacular
entertainment marshalled by Fiona Phillips in front of Her
Majesty, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles.
The WMC, the hot new £106m venue in Cardiff Bay, has captured
the imagination of the stars, all eager to be part of this
opening feast of entertainment.
"The event will truly show Wales to the world," said Judith
Isherwood, chief executive of the WMC. "And it will bring the
world to Wales."

Winners land free tickets to gala
Free tickets to the opening night at the Wales Millennium
Centre have been sent to more than 1,000 people.
Almost 9,000 bid for the tickets to the show on 26 November.
Names were chosen via public ballot earlier this month. Most
of the winners live in Wales.
The gala "Cymry For the World" is the
launch event at the £104m Lottery-funded arts venue in Cardiff
Bay.
Performers will include opera singer Bryn Terfel, the Welsh
National Opera and the harpist Catrin Finch.
Centre chief executive, Judith Isherwood, said: "We have been
delighted by the interest in the ballot and the number of
people who entered.
"There is clearly great excitement about the opening, and an
eagerness to have a look inside the centre and be amongst our
first audience members ever.
"That excitement is shared by others - not just in the UK - we
are inundated daily by requests from the media and state
officials from across the globe wishing to come and visit -
it's a very exciting time."
The ballot was run by the Electoral Reform Society. Winning
households are entitled to a maximum of two tickets.
Other stars expected to feature on the opening night include
Charlotte Church, Matthew Rhys, Sian Phillips, Ruthie Henshall
and Jonathan Pryce.
Arts companies
The gala is seen as a celebration of
Wales' contribution to world art.
The centre will house arts companies, including Welsh National
Opera.
The Welsh Assembly Government is investing £37m of public
money in the project, as well as £2m a year in revenue
support.

Arts centre reveals stellar line-up
Opera star Bryn Terfel will lead a glittering line-up of stars
at the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre.
Stars including Charlotte Church, Matthew Rhys and Ruthie
Henshall will appear to lauch the venue, which will become a
home for Welsh arts.
Bryn Trfel will
be creative director for the opening weekend
|
World-famous bass baritone Terfel scaled
Snowdon, in north Wales, to reveal his plans to sing at the
£104m arts centre's opening weekend.
Building work at the centre is on schedule - it is currently
being clad in Welsh slate - and it is due to open its doors in
26 November 2004.
Chief executive Judith Isherwood said the opening weekend will
"have something to inspire and delight just about anyone".
"I think the challenge with these kinds of facilities is that
for something that is as beautiful as this is on the outside,
we have got to make sure that what is going on inside is as
good, if not better," she said.
Other stars who will appear at the cultural extravaganza
include Max Boyce, Elaine Paige, Griff Rhys Jones, Matthew
Rhys and Aled Jones.

The Welsh National Opera (WNO) and the National Orchestra of
Wales, who will move into the centre, will also perform,
alongside guests including the Royal Ballet.
Anthony Freud, from the WNO, said the group was already
excited about moving into its new home.
"We will begin to make art in that building and celebrate the
fact we have now one of the great cultural edifices of the
world," he said.
Roy Campbell Moore, from Diversions Dance, added it was great
to see so many stars returning for the concert.
"There are famous people from Wales working all over the world
in all of the art forms and I am really delighted some are
going to come back here to share that with this building," he
said.
Other venues across Wales and the world will also be showing
the concert on giant screens.
Charlotte Church has been revealed in the line-up
|
The arts centre will hold international musicals, operas,
ballet and dance.
Bryn Terfel laid the project's slate foundation stone in
January.
"I can't wait to come here to perform and I will be here on
the opening night - in fact I will probably run onto the
stage," said Terfel at the foundation ceremony.
The inscribed slate block was transported from its quarry of
origin in Bethesda, Gwynedd, to Cardiff Bay to symbolise the
unity of Wales in the project.
The centre is a major part of the redevelopment of Cardiff Bay
which will also include the £41m new building for the Welsh
assembly.
Work also got under way on Thursday on a £700m sports village
on an 80 acre site designed to complete the "arc of
entertainment" first envisaged by Cardiff Council a decade
ago.
