Church's film debut
likely to open top comedy festival in US
Feb 18 2003 The Western Mail - The National Newspaper Of Wales
THE film in which Voice of an Angel Charlotte
Church makes her acting debut is to open a prestigious film festival
in America next week.
The film, I'll Be There, will mark the start of the US Comedy Arts
Festival, in Aspen on February 26.
It as originally called The Family Business, and Charlotte spent
months filming in her hometown of Cardiff as a humble paper girl who
finds out her father is a rock star.
The comedy festival features 24 films. Kevin Haasarud, Film
Discovery programme director said, "We are very pleased at the
strength and depth of the films this year.
"They are powerful examples of how poignant and
socially-relevant humour can be."
The film, which is said to have a release date of March 14 in
America, marks another string to the young singer's bow.
Recently bathing in the success of a top-five single with The Opera
Song, she is also planning to give a lecture at Oxford based on her
experiences.
Charlotte, who turns 17 on Friday , will be hoping for similar
success with I'll Be There.
In America, the film has been given a PG-13 certificate which covers
drug references, some sexual humour or nudity and brief language.
Directed and starring actor Craig Ferguson as Charlotte's newly
discovered father, the movie also stars Joss Ackland, Buffy The
Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head and Jemma Redgrave.
The film was inspired by the true story of actress Liv Tyler, who
discovered the father she had throughout childhood was not her birth
father. That responsibility fell to Aerosmith lead singer Steve
Tyler.
Charlotte's character discovers she is the result of a brief fling
between her mother and a washed-out '80s pop star. Following her
father's lead, the teenager embarks on her own musical career.
The star admitted she had some acting tips from fellow Welsh star
Catherine Zeta Jones, and it will feature another musical style for
the teenager.
The film will be distributed by Warner Bros and Morgan Creek
Productions.
Charlotte's management did not have any comments about her debut
film and also did not say whether she would be appearing at the
festival.
Her mother Maria should have no worries about how the film is
received.
Speaking when Charlotte's acting debut was announced she said,
"This is a new venture for Charlotte - both with acting and
changing her sound vocally. There will be a few surprises for people
as Charlotte won't be singing classical songs.
"We have been involved in this film for about a year and a half
since the director, Craig Ferguson, said he would write a script
specifically for Charlotte.
"Charlotte is excited but quite nervous about acting. It's a
whole different ball game from singing, which she's been doing for
years.
"But I know she'll be fine as she's a natural actress."
