President
Clinton to Ride Carousel of Hope Oct. 28 at the Beverly Hilton
Hotel, Beverly Hills, Calif.
Latin
Superstar Ricky Martin to Headline Show Featuring Toni Braxton, Charlotte
Church
LOS
ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Sept. 18, 2000-- President Bill
Clinton, who along with Hillary Clinton is a co-chair, will attend
the Carousel of Hope, the world's premier gala benefiting juvenile
diabetes, set for Saturday, Oct. 28, in Beverly Hills, Calif., at
Merv Griffin's Beverly Hills Hilton.
Former
President Gerald Ford and Mrs. Ford are also scheduled to attend.
Barbara and Marvin Davis host the event that benefits childhood
diabetes.
More than 100
Hollywood stars, including Dustin Hoffman, Jennifer Lopez, Mark
Wahlberg, Sylvester Stallone, Sir Sean Connery and Goldie Hawn, will
also attend.
Other honorary
co-chairmen include Vice President and Mrs. Gore, President and Mrs.
Gerald R. Ford and President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan.
Latin singing
sensation and Grammy Award winner Ricky Martin will headline the
entertainment program and Jay Leno will once again be master of
ceremonies. Singing sensations Charlotte
Church and Toni Braxton will also entertain.
Since its
founding in 1978 by the Davises, the Carousel of Hope has raised
$49.5 million to date on behalf of the Barbara Davis Center for
Childhood Diabetes in Denver, where more than 3,000 youngsters
receive specialized care for diabetes. The Los Angeles chapter of
the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the American Diabetes
Foundation will also benefit from the evening's fund raising.
This year's
event will be the 14th Carousel of Hope, which in the past has
featured such entertainers as Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Stevie
Wonder, Celine Dion, Neil Diamond, Placido Domingo and Bette Midler.
Along with a
spectacular silent auction, the evening's program will include a
stellar musical performance by headliner Ricky Martin and produced
by veteran television impresario George Schlatter. Multiple Grammy
Award winner David Foster will be the musical director and the
musical program is headed by a committee chaired by recording
industry legends Clive Davis, Quincy Jones, Peter Lopez and Angelo
Medina.
Corporate
sponsors for the Oct. 28 event are Guess? Inc., Toys ``R'' Us,
Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Merv Griffin's Beverly Hilton,
American Airlines and Sotheby's.
Each year, more
than 160,000 Americans lose their lives to diabetes, but the Davises
remain optimistic and determined. ``We have come a long way and have
seen miraculous advances toward the cure and prevention since we
began this united fight over 20 years ago,'' said Mrs. Davis.
``With improved
treatments, better insulins, thinner needles and more accurate
testing to keep blood sugars stabilized, we are seeing the quality
of life improved and extended for the over 3,000 children from
across America who are cared for at our center in Denver.''

Church for Substation
Lending glam to the fundraiser for The Substation, Church lowered her fees for the charity effort.
THE SUBSTATION -- an arts centre better known for championing the cause of indie bands and struggling artistes -- and Charlotte Church, the millionaire Welsh singing sensation.
Witness this unlikely marriage on Oct 18 at the centre's tenth anniversary gala dinner, when the 14-year-old soprano will perform.
The Substation's general manager, Ms Seow Sher Yen, says it hopes to raise $400,000 from the fund-raising dinner at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia hotel.
The money will go to the centre's Endowment Fund, set up in 1997 with a $5 million target so the centre can be financially independent in the long run. Currently, it needs to raise at least $250,000 a year to meet operational costs.
Ms Seow admits that gala dinners are rare for The Substation, because "we're not glam like the Singapore Symphony Orchestra or the Singapore Dance Theatre''.
But the centre wanted to celebrate its 10 years in a big way. "Church is a young talent and The Substation has always been supporting young talents. She can inspire young artistes in that, regardless of age, you can achieve international recognition,'' she adds.
She declined to say how much The Substation is paying for the singer, only that Church had lowered her fees because the performance was for charity.
The dinner's main sponsor is New Economy company Indigoz. The guest of honour is the Prime Minister's wife, Mrs Goh Chok Tong.
Both of Church's two albums, Voice Of An Angel and Charlotte Church, have sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.
Known for a mixed repertoire of classical and pop standards, she was named British
Artist Of The Year at the Classical Brit Awards in May. She was in Singapore early this year to promote her second album.
The Substation's charity gala dinner, featuring Charlotte Church and opening acts Ankara and Tammy L. Wong Dance Company, is on at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia on Oct 18. Tables of 10 are priced at $5,000, $8,000, $10,000 and $20,000. Call 337-7535 or fax 337-2729.

Charlotte
appears on Minneapolis Television's "Whatever"
show. | September

|
I'd like to
thank RC Boisclair for telling me about this TV appearance in Minnesota. Basically Charlotte was in Minneapolis
and while she was there she made time
for an interview with Kare 11. Here is what RC had to say:
"NBC
affiliate Kare 11 had a Charlotte Church interview and piece about
her on the local Teen Show "Whatever." It's a great
piece. Charlotte went to a petting zoo here in Minnesota,
and the interview was a slightly different take on her career
because the teens are not journalists, so there were more
realistic and grounded questions."

Here
is some more interesting news on Billy and Charlotte's work on a
duet (thanks to Jason for this!:
Billy
Gilman And Charlotte Church To Record Duet In England -
Twelve-year-old singer Billy Gilman is a little bit country and
14-year-old singer Charlotte Church is a little bit opera, but
both young singers are looking to solidify their pop music
careers with an upcoming duet. Gilman
tells LAUNCH that in addition to all of the press and
promotion he's been doing recently, he will be
boarding a plane today to record a duet with the Welsh singing
sensation and fellow Sony Music artist.
"I'm packing up my things again and going to England. I'm doing
a duet with Charlotte Church," he says, adding, "I'm
doing a lot to promote my album. I doing a lot of radio and a
lot of press. There's so many things in the making, we don't know
which ones are going to be definite or not."
One thing that is definite is that the combination of Gilman and
Church's
powerful voices should make for one very interesting duet.
Gilman added that they both
have the same goal in mind -- both are looking to crossover
even more towards the pop
music realm: "[Charlotte] wants to turn pop. She wants to
go the more of like the
Britney Spear s/'N Sync type of thing. She still wants to have
that voice, but she wants to
do it in a pop feeling. [So] we're doing a pop duet. It's kind
of pop and kind of country, so we'll see
what happens."
The
still-untitled duet may appear on Gilman's Classic Christmas album,
which is due out
October 17, or it may be released as a single on Church's album,
according to Gilman. His
single "One Voice" is currently at No. 2 on the Billboard
Country Singles Sales chart.
Meanwhile, Church will head back to the U.S. as early as Sept.10 for
a
limited U.S. engagement that will feature music from her
chart-topping album Voice Of
An Angel and her newest Sony Classical release, Charlotte
Church. The five-date stint
kicks off with two performances with the Nashville Symphony at
Jackson Hall in Nashville,
on Sept. 10 and 12.
