Charlotte Waves Hello to New Year

SINGING sensation Charlotte Church led the Millennium celebrations in Wales with an open air performance.

The teenager performed two songs at the Calennig celebration in Cardiff city centre.

Thousands gathered in Cathays Park to listen to Charlotte and enjoy an action-packed evening of entertainment.

She sang her latest single Just Wave Hello which was broadcast around the world. Charlotte refused the chance to perform for the Pope and President Clinton to be in her home town for the Millennium.

Actor Ioan Gruffudd lit the National Beacon and a spectacular firework display greeted the Millennium in the sky above Cardiff Castle.

Across the city the Manic Street Preachers thrilled more than 50,000 fans at the Millennium Stadium in the largest indoor concert held in the UK.

The Manics rounded off a great year, supported by Super Furry Animals, with a spectacular performance.

But the concert suffered a minor setback when fans were delayed entry for about 20 minutes after the electronic gates system failed.

Beacons lit up the skyline across the country and party-goers flooded onto the streets in towns and villages.

But it was not such a happy time for 300 families who were left without electricity due to a faulty transformer at about 6pm.

The problem affected homes in the Porthmadog area. Manweb engineers were hoping to locate the damaged lines and restore supplies before midnight.
