Charlotte
proves top draw at Party in Park
Charlotte Church swapped the freezing New Zealand
winter for the hottest Welsh weekend of the year as
she returned to her hometown stage.
The Voice of an Angel star-turned-pop princess was
the star turn at Cardiff's biggest open-air concert
of the summer - the annual Party In The Park in
Cooper's Field.
Around 20,000 music fans basked in the heatwave
yesterday to welcome home Charlotte - who had just
flown back from New Zealand, where her rugby hero
boyfriend Gavin Henson is with the British and Irish
Lions party.
They also had a avalanche of cheers for her
co-performers Rachel Stevens, Daniel Bedingfield,
Rooster, Kelly Clarkson and Lemar at the O2 Music
and Red Dragon FM-hosted event.
But there was no question who most of the crowd had
come to see.
'Definitely Charlotte Church,' said Matt James, 18,
of Penylan, Cardiff.
'She's gorgeous and I really like her new song. I
can't believe she was an opera singer a few years
ago - she's much better as a pop singer.
'Gavin Henson's a lucky bloke!'
Kelly Robins, 19, of Barry, agreed, saying: 'She
hasn't done a concert in Cardiff since she started
her pop career, so we really wanted to see her here.
'I think she's great. She says what she thinks and
doesn't let other people get her down - she's a
proper Cardiff girl.'
Red Dragon FM marketing director Kath Snell said she
was delighted with this year's Party In The Park.
'The crowd was absolutely fantastic,' she said.
'The atmosphere was amazing and the fans went mad
for all the different acts.
'It's always great to see that all the hard work
which goes into staging this event is worth it, and
the reaction we're getting from listeners proves
it's getting more popular every year.'
Charlotte sweats it out after NZ return
CHARLOTTE CHURCH topped the bill
yesterday at a packed and boiling hot Coopers Field
in Cardiff for the annual Red Dragon Party in the
Park.
Returning from a flying visit to see her boyfriend
in New Zealand she showed her disappointment when we
broke the news to her about Gavin Henson's failure
to be selected for the first Test.
Before she went on stage to sing to her home crowd
she said, "That's dreadful."
The 19-year-old was concerned that Henson wouldn't
have any Test matches and asked if the team was
likely to stay the same for all the matches.
But by the time she got on stage to play to around
20,000, she was chirpy and launching into a full
comedy act.
She was joined on the packed bill by fellow female
singers Kelly Clarkson and Rachel Stevens, newcomers
The Noise Next Door, Mario and pop veterans
Bananarama.
Most of the stars then moved on to Party in the Park
in Swansea, sponsored by The Wave.
Playing four songs from her new album, Tissues and
Issues out on July 11, Charlotte admitted she wasn't
fit enough to dance and sing at the same time.
She had been looking forward to performing for a
Welsh audience saying it "should be fun, they should
be OK". Unused to positive publicity recently, the
singer said she had been overwhelmed by the support
that she has been getting for her new single Crazy
Chick.
